Have nowhere to sleep tonight? That can be a scary reality for many people across Canada. It can happen to anyone of us for a wide variety of reasons. Look at the news of all the people being displaced, its happening in every province.
Every province also has some supports available with a variety of services for the variety of needs. If you find yourself employed but temporarily unhoused for an evening or two, you’re waiting for your apartment to be available, or moved to a new town for work you could think it’s easy to stay in a hotel or motel for a few nights. If money is tight, you could even choose a hostel in a pinch. But what do you do when you don’t have a home in your future?
There are non-profit organizations, and government funded programs that have shelter options for those in need. You can benefit from these services if you find yourself unhoused for an unknown time. If you’re going through some major life changing events (recovering from addiction, leaving abuse, homeless youth). Please know you are not alone and the people working in these programs are there because they want to help you.
Centers stating they are an emergency shelter or cold relief shelter may not be open year round. (I have tried to track and keep the map up to date on facilities).
Lots of locations can offer year-round support and longer care, more than one night. Some locations can include immediate assistance, meals, showers, clothing and a bed for a night. Other locations can provide secondary housing programs, mental health classes, legal assistance, addictions recovery services and family services among others.
Please spend a little time to look over our maps for your needs. I encourage you to reach out to each location you feel fits your needs to discuss what services they offer and the requirements they may have for you to register. Please don’t feel intimidated by this, they get calls on a regular basis. You don’t even have to give them your name if you just want to ask questions. (They want to help you, its why they exist.) The 'system' is complicated, and you are not expected to have all the answers.
Joining shelters and accepting the supports they provide can help build your strength to grow in your life and achieve the dreams you have for yourself.

Some places require you to register or show identification before accessing locations services. Please contact the locations for their requirements.*

The Salvation Army
July 10th, 2019 marked the opening of the new Salvation Army Richmond House, a 36-bed Emergency Shelter designed to replace the outdated facility on Shell Road, which was only able to accommodate a small number of men.
Richmond House also offers three meals daily and access to critical support services, such as case management and referrals to community resources.
All of the new living space was designed intentionally, featuring separate areas for men and women in addition to a co-ed space and expansive private backyard with plenty of green space. Pets are welcome too, allowing people to access services without making the difficult decision to give up their animal in order to access services.
