Clothing shows the world who you are. It doesn’t have to be expensive to lift your spirits and feel confident. When we are feeling low or depressed, we might think it doesn't matter how we look, and that’s okay. We all go through seasons in our lives where we may not be feeling our best, or so busy with ‘to-dos’ we feel we don’t have time to think about what to wear. Sometimes there just isn't anything left in the budget for frills like clothing.
Choosing what clothing to wear is a unique experience for everyone. Whether you buy brand new or second-hand clothing, choose something you will feel comfortable and good in. Feeling good in your outfit for the day can increase your feeling of confidence and potentially improve your mental health.
If you walk into a clothing store, or wander through the clothes aisles while grocery shopping it might feel overwhelming. There are so many choices now, and on the display they can look amazing.
There are some tools you can use to help you choose clothing. Depending on your comfort level you can choose to match clothing by complimentary colors to your skin tone. Or choose the cut and type of fabric to compliment your body shape. There are a ton of videos online from style coaches giving advice and discuss the technique of ‘building an outfit’.
Have some fun and try something new! If you’re scared and filled with anxiety, try considering experimenting with clothing as a self care moment. You don’t need to purchase the clothing, so go on and try it on!
Having a sewing machine at your side can be a game changer. When the pants you just got are 3 inches too long, or that t-shirt is two sizes two big, you can alter the clothing you've got to save money and make it last longer.
Look for a second hand sewing machine online or in second hand shops. Quite often you can find a bag of thread to go along with it.
Thanks to the internet, a lot of older sewing machines operating manuals can be found online for free, and there are lots of 'how to use' videos on you tube. With a little patience and practice, this is a great opportunity for personal growth build confidence.
