- Chinese proverb
I was standing in the line at the food bank and I watched children running and playing, while
parents stand in line. I started imagining the parents are probably wondering how they are going
to get their kids to eat this food, and how much money they have left to pay the bills. When we
as humans are in that state of mind. We don't have time or emotional energy to search for help.
We are barely keeping the tears away most days, and exhausted from not sleeping because of
worry and stress.
Through my experience I have noticed that some services are kind of hidden. Did you know
there are places offering free mental health support? Free breakfast you can grab and go? Free
clothes to help with job finding? I didn’t.
This website was inspired and created through a combination of lived experience and 'war
stories' of others using these services in their time of need. It has grown far larger than I
anticipated. I wanted to help people find services in my community, but I found there is so much
support in communities across Canada. What started as just finding food banks, has now grown
to 13 maps ranging in services from food, shelter, senior centers, youth support, mental health,
and pregnancy & child support.
I hope that this website can help connect people in their community to the resources they need,
resources that are already working for them. I believe this website can help people find resources
they didn’t even know existed. I believe bringing attention to these areas can also show where
services are lacking in communities to encourage future change.
Thank you to the services that are there for us. I hope, though this website, I can give back.
